Abstract

The question of union revival in the United States is closely connected to the condition of democracy. Both unionism and the broader democracy depend upon the willingness of powerful authorities (employers or the political leadership) to concede power to concerned communities. Much of the conventional wisdom about American institutions assumes that a single system or structure of rights applies across the nation. However, the differences across the states are profound, both for workers challenging management and citizens petitioning government.
