Abstract

The 2012 Chicago teachers’ strike was about much more than pay. It was a fight over issues such as class size, the length of the school day and year, and school closures — the disparate racial impact they have on students and teachers of color. These issues, combined with the economic and industrial decline of Chicago, made the Chicago Public Schools a target for the corporate reform/charter schools movement.
