Abstract
Unions worldwide have struggled to figure out how best to fight against the expansion of informal and precarious work. In Informal Workers and Collective Action, Adrienne Eaton, Susan Schurman, and Martha Chen ask under what conditions do unions succeed. The editors assemble case studies showing the potential for collective action to transform informal jobs, bringing workers more security and improved conditions. They also suggest that unions and other worker groups face steep challenges in bringing about sustainable improvements in job quality for informal workers.
