Abstract

Employee ownership (EO) occupies a curious position within contemporary debates about the workplace, inequality, and unemployment. Observers across the political spectrum have good reason to support it. From the right, EO means that more people become capitalists, while from the left, EO means that workers own the means of production. A large body of research has also demonstrated that when combined with more a participative workplace culture, EO leads to a number of better outcomes forĀ  employees and firms. Add to this its alignment with the core American principle of democracy, and EO should be a winner from a policy perspective.
