Abstract

Most likely, LERA members know that Social Security benefits are not adequate to living comfortably in retirement, and even these inadequate benefits are continually threatened by the false claims that the system is bankrupt and too costly to maintain. Also likely is that LERA members are familiar with the research by a top pension expert, Teresa Ghilarducci, New School economics professor and head of the Schwartz Center. Full disclosure: I was Teresa Ghilarducci’s doctoral thesis adviser at UC Berkeley, where she began her research on retirement income. I am proud of her work and influence on this critically important topic that affects the well-being of millions of vulnerable people who have contributed to our society.
