Abstract

Historian Richard Hofstadter notably observed in 1964 that “American politics has often been an arena for angry minds.” Sadly, we are again living in that arena, encouraged by our president. The first year of Donald Trump’s presidency has only heightened the levels of discontent that his election exposed. Divisions among Americans seem deeper than ever, basic democratic institutions and norms are threatened, and political culture is poisoned with ugly and dishonest rhetoric.
