Two recent reports by the Project for Middle Class Renewal at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign School of Labor and Employment Relations attempt to measure the state of a state—in this case, Illinois. In the first, Taking the Pulse of Illinois’ Middle Class, Habans (2017), examines the recent history of the state’s middle class while contending with the difficulty of defining the term middle class in a meaningful way for research.
