Abstract

McCrate, an economist, looks at work scheduling practices• She finds that women and blacks in lowpaid jobs often have unpredictable hours and varying work schedules.• Her research shows that the invisible hand of markets is inadequate in compensating workers fairly for hourly jobs with unstable schedules.• She concludes: “It will take a broad social conversation about schedules to address the competing interests of workers and employers, workers and consumers, men and women. Fortunately, it seems to have begun.”
