Abstract

To be effective, organizations need managers that offer more than technical expertise. Because companies usually operate best when they have good employee relations and low labor force turnover, managers must also be skilled at leadership and at facilitating the work of others. In today’s economy, how an organization prepares and trains managers can play a vital role in determining its success.Managers are increasingly being asked to take on human resources responsibilities. But they don’t always have the knowledge, skill, and ability to handle these responsibilities effectively.1 Managers may be experts in their technical areas, but they seldom have the insight that HR practitioners develop through years of professional education and practical experience. Too much HR responsibility is often pushed onto managers before they are ready, and the training provided is usually insufficient.2
