Abstract

A career as a labor law and industrial relations professor is not usually considered high risk. For Marco Biagi, a distinguished academic from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy, his work resulted in the loss of his life. In March 2002, soon after he delivered to the Italian government a white paper and the related delegating legislation outlining his ideas for modernizing the labor and industrial relations laws of Italy, he was gunned down in front of his home by members of a terrorist group.Despite his death, his research continues through the work of three groups: the Marco Biagi Centre for International and Comparative Studies, ADAPT, and the Marco Biagi Foundation at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. The papers included in this volume were presented at the Sixth International Conference in Commemoration of Professor Marco Biagi on the theme “Workers’ Rights Protection in a New World of Work: The Case for a Comparative and Interdisciplinary Approach to Labour Relations” on March 17–19, 2008.
