Abstract

Many economists emphasize the net national benefits of free trade and globalization. But economists also agree that unrestricted trade hurts some American companies, communities, and employees. There can be no doubt that globalization’s rewards and losses are distributed unevenly across industries, regions, jobs, and individuals. Workers at Carrier Corporation in central New York State are among those who have recently paid a high price.
