Abstract

This volu me com memorates the fiftieth anniversmy of the Industrial Relations Research Association (IRRA) . For a half century the IRRA has provided a unique meeting ground where people interested in the world of work, be they academics, practitioners, third-party neutrals, or policy makers, can discuss and debate the major employment issues of the day. It was the strongly held conviction of the founders of the IRRA that if this debate and discussion are to be most fi·uitful, they must be based on and enriched by sound, rigorous, and objective research from all the academic disciplines related to the employment relationship . To leave no doubt about the centrality of research to the mission of the IRRA, the founders included the word " Research" in the very name of the organization.
