Abstract

This book grew out of an invitation by the Industrial Relations Research Association to present a survey of the most significant issues facing the field of Organizational Behavior today. We have selected six such issues for special emphasis. Each of these is of major current interest to Organizational Behavior scholars and has practical relevance to the larger concerns of society in general. There are other areas of perhaps equal significance-small group behavior, role theory, communications theory, career paths, and reward systems, to provide a few examples-but the ones we have chosen seem to have the greatest relevance to broader social issues. Our intention was not to write a textbook in the traditional sense. Obviously a field as vast as this one cannot be compressed into a book this small; rather, we sought to take advantage of our space limitations to present main trends and to emphasize the practical implications of these. This book should provide a framework for the field as well as a guide for further studies. Ideally, the student should read this book not alone, but concurrently with the more basic studies that we cite.
