Abstract

Research in industrial relations has continued to flourish and change since the IRRA's last review volumes in 1956-57. New journals devoted to literature in the field have j oined an already impressive list, and research reports, monographs and text books have added significantly to industrial relations libraries. In keeping with its charter for the "encouragement, reporting and critical discussion of research," the Industrial Relations Research Association's Executive Board felt that the Association's special research volumes in 1970 and 1971 should be devoted to an appraisal of the research since our last review. Outstanding \lXperts in the field were asked to make in-depth analyses of the character and contributions of the research output in their areas of expertise. In addition to the four chapters included in this volume, four chapters will be presented in next year's volume : Collective Bargaining Trends and Patterns, by James Stern ; Labor and Industrial Relations Abroad, by John H. G. Crispo ; Public Policy and Labor-Management Relations, by Ben Aaron ; and Public Policy in the Manpower Field, by Garth L. Mangum. Members of the IRRA's Executive Board served as an editorial review panel for the manuscripts included in this volume. For their willingness to devote time to this task and for their helpful comments and suggestions, we are especially grateful to John Crispo, University of Toronto; Donald M. Irwin, Deere & Company; Garth L. Mangum, University of Utah ; F. Ray Marshall, University of Texas ; Howard Rosen, Manpower Administration, USDL; Lazare Teper, ILGWU ; Lloyd IDman, University of California, Berkeley; and William F. Whyte, C ornell University.
