Abstract

The domestic auto industry is facing what amounts to a “perfect storm.” It is buffeted by international competition, rising costs, supply-chain turmoil, and energy-price uncertainty. The convergence of these forces can be traced in recent headlines, from the downgrading to “junk” status of General Motors (GM) and Ford debt, to successive rounds of job cuts and a swirl of alliance rumors.
