Abstract

The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) appeared in American history slightly more than 100 years ago. In that era, the American Federation of Labor (AFL) produced one historical figure, Samuel Gompers. The IWW contributed several. Its founding convention in 1905 included Bill Haywood, Lucy Parsons, Mother Jones, Eugene Debs, and Daniel De Leon. Joe Hill is a celebrated martyr. Clarence Darrow defended Haywood at a murder trial.
