Book Review: Debunking the Meritocracy Myth

Abstract

Americans like to think the United States is a meritocracy. An appealing view is that the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution sowed the seeds of a society in which all are judged by their qualifications and abilities, and that those seeds took root over the years and matured after World War II. Nepotism, meanwhile, is usually associated with tribal societies and developing economies hamstrung by rampant corruption and cronyism.
