Abstract

In the past decade, workplace codes of conduct have evolved from novelty to common practice in the consumer-goods sectors. This has happened in response to pressure from consumers, shareholders, and a growing number of interested stakeholders. Workplace codes are voluntary instruments that global corporations use to signal their intent to manage supply chains responsibly and according to international ethical expectations. Local factory managers also use codes to signal their ability to meet such expectations and thereby attract orders. Recognition of the value of involving all workers in meeting and monitoring such codes is growing among corporate leaders.
