Abstract

In the wake of recent legislative proposals to reform state and federal health care protections, two new books deserve a wide audience: Ensuring Fairness in Health Care Coverage: An Employer’s Guide to Making Good Decisions on Tough Issues by Matthew K. Wyniak and Abraham P. Schwab, and Apart at the Seams: The Collapse of Private Pension and Health Care Protections by Charles R. Morris. The sponsors of these books are at different ends of the political spectrum and, taken together, offer a glimpse of a broad terrain of ideas. In particular, the conservative American Medical Association (AMA) holds the copyright to the Wyniak and Schwab volume, while the more liberal Century Foundation sponsored Morris’s project. At the same time, the authors do not allow an agenda to get in the way of careful data reporting and historical contextualizing.
