Abstract

While anti-unionism has become the norm in many countries, the depth and proliferation of anti-union employer strategies in Australia appear to be exceptional. Declining union density and power are a result of a complex mix of factors, but a “paradigm shift” in employer strategies toward trade unions has been a major contributor. This article examines critical developments in these strategies over the past decade. Our analysis highlights the pivotal role of the Australian state in constituting anti-union employer strategies.
